I was a "car attendant" in 1971 on the converted box cars. Our main job was raising and lowering the steps and helping people to get on and off.. Some steps were wood, others metal but both were heavy! We also answered questions from passengers. I will always remember a farmer from Iowa (and his blond teenage daughter!) who thought the railroad was newly built. I was a Police Officer in Los Alamos at the time and passengers were surprised that someone in my profession was an unpaid volunteer on the railroad. I guess they thought we had no other life...………
