50 years ago- Mexican narrow gauge quits steam

July 18, 2018 05:26AM
Sometime this month back in 1968, NdeM abruptly quit the use of ng steam, most of which came out of the Mexico City area.
The majority of power were the heavy, modern G-030 Consolidations.

Reason for this was the Summer Olympics. They did "not want the world to come here and see us as a third world country".

At the same time, the last 17 QR-1 4-8-4 types were also sidelined.

When you think of it, 1968 was a steam in retreat year: NdeM ng and std. guage steam, D&RGW ng steam, Hillcrest Lbr. Co. on Vancouver Island (3T Climax 10)
and in early September,Magma Arizona 7 ran her last revenue day on or around September 4th.
I was there for that one and saw nobody else with a camera that morning.
