1923 John Fowler 0-6-2T

Hello all! My name is Hayden Seybold, I run the machine shop for Peter Nott’s private two foot gauge collection here in California and I felt it was appropriate to show my new personal project.
I now officially own a 3 foot gauge 1923 0-6-2T built by the John Fowler & Leeds company in England. This locomotive was #2 of 3 0-6-2Ts Fowler built for the Sena Sugar estates in Mozambique, South Africa. It ran till 1970, that year the line was converted to 3 foot 6 inch. The locomotive later went on display nearby, one of the sisters got wrecked, no confirmation on the other one. My locomotive was painted In a gaudy circus scheme while on display and my boss Peter Nott purchased the locomotive along with a hoard of two foot gauge equipment at auction from Sena Sugar estates. To give a little history, Peter worked as a crop duster at the sugar estate and took many of the locomotives we have here, to work everyday!

In about 2005 the locomotive and others were brought over and first landed at Paul Boschanns shop in Carson, California. A couple years later it was moved to our old shop on Sheridan Road in Arroyo Grande where it was disassembled for a restoration that would never come. When we were moving out of the old shop to our new site, it made no logical sense to bring the locomotive into the land of two foot gauge, so a close friend of mine stepped in and took the locomotive to ensure it was kept safe. Over the last few months I’ve been ironing out a deal with said friend and can proudly say that I own this wonderful plantation locomotive and will lead a ground up rebuild on it. I’ve worked on a lot of locomotives and machined countless parts, I’m so thrilled to finally have my own locomotive.This is going to be a massive under taking that will span many MANY years, but none the less I will rebuild this locomotive. The restoration will start at my friends property till I acquire property of my own and build a shop. The majority of the locomotives parts exist and will move them all to the property soon.

This 1923 0-6-2T weighs 23 tons empty, has 30” drivers, cylinders are 12X16 and had an operating pressure of 180 PSI
