I've been exploring the 3 foot gauge Madera Sugar Pine railroad this summer as last Fall's fire burned off a large portion of Speckerman Mountain and exposed many of the grades and logging camps that had been hidden for decades. This first comparison was taken at the top of the short incline on the west side of Speckerman Mountain which was used in 1925. The "Then" photo comes from Hank Johnston's "Thunder in the Mountains" and is credited to Robert Parker. The "Now" photo was taken on July 7, 2018. It was impossible to get the exact match as Mr. Parker apparently stood on top of something to elevate his image, thus the mountains don't seem to perfectly line up.
As you can see, much has changed...
