Originally, the first unions required a crew per cab. Being MUed did not matter. This was the main reason many “B” units were ordered. The EMD “FTs” were coupled with a draw bar instead of couplers for this reason too.

I also recall reading stories about engine repairs why still moving, only slowing to lessen the strain while doing motor repairs. Including cutting out a cylinder and caping the fuel lines and then getting back up to speed. The don’t think this was possible on the steamers.
