I heard a story in the Antonito CRF that, "awhile back", the Friends had been up to inspect the cars, and were offered the cars in exchange for comparable office space in some manner of structure. From what I remember, at the time, the Friends didn't have the money (considering the transportation issues), and that the cars were not in pristine shape underneath.
So, some evolution of the camp management knew we were interested at one point.
I'd bet a shiny penny that if the Friends knew they were gonna burn, we would have turned the Brake Inspector House into a spleef dispensary to raise the money, especially in light of the San Juan project.
