Sam,
To me that indicates that the majority of people ride the D&S for the proximity to doing other touristy stuff in Durango, able to be doing other touristy stuff in Silverton halfway through the ride, view the magnificent scenery that the Animas Canyon offers way more than taking another steam train ride.
Otherwise if they were all there only for the Steam experience there would be two extra trains out of Chama, assuming there is capacity to accommodate the influx.
Don't go getting me wrong; I prefer the C&TS over the D&S but then I hate crowds, @#$%& and drunks....and the open car ain't on the end no more.
