The D&S takes all sorts of precautions. They chase every train with a fire patrol. All of their locomotives have spark arrestors which incorporate a system that sprays water into the exhaust. The final northbound train each day also has a box car in the consist which contains a pair of 500 gallon tanks and fire pumps. In addition, they have strategically placed tank cars of water. They also lease a helicopter for fire detection and suppression. They have a bigger investment than any tourist railroad I've ever seen in fire prevention, detection and suppression.
Oil firing may be the next step. Based on some of the news stories I've read, it sounds as if they are open to that idea as well.
