Uh, Oh – I'm falling behind -
4:30 p.m. PDT = 5:30 p.m. MDT – and since Time Was Of The Essence on 05/28/68 – I rather doubt that the 'Mad Dash' wasted much time in Chama (although the crew from Alamosa, being off-duty from 3:35 'til 4:30, probably had a beer or two at Foster's or Kelly's while waiting for the Company automobile sent over to take them home).
West of Chama, #478 replaced #476 as the road engine. At least half a dozen fans followed the train as far as the Continental Divide and the highway crossing farther west

Ernie and John, at least, continued to follow past Amargo and on into Monero

Unfortunately, Ernie reached the end of a roll of film with the above shot, and didn't get any photos of the train passing through scenic downtown Monero and past the coal tipple(s). Per John, he got one very nice shot of the on-coming train about 1/4 mile west of Ernie's last shot (see [
chasingtrains.smugmug.com]), but also missed getting a good one in the heart of town.
