As usual, the tenders were topped off with coal at the Red Devil loader in Antonito; but the train was short, so the customary moving of the helper to the middle or rear was skipped

The tank had frozen two or three years earlier and could no longer be filled with water, but the inlet pipe could still be turned on to slowly top off the locomotive's tenders.
