True that the 497 continued on to Chama without a test run on the run Greg describes but the mechanics and crew were none too happy about it. They sent a mechanic with the engine to Antonito, and another one drove a company pickup truck to Chama to be there when the train arrived. When the engineer and fireman took over the newly shopped 497 at the roundhouse, they checked things over and the fireman complained to the mechanic that the firebox door didn't open properly. The mechanic asked him if the bell rang, and the answer was yes, then did the whistle blow, and again yes, and then the mechanic said something like "what the hell do you want? Everything to be perfect?" and then took off back for the roundhouse. My friend Terry Barnes and I witnessed this and got quite a chuckle out of the exchange. That was 1967. Russo must really be old if he was seeing all this back in the 60s.
