A secondary purpose of the oil torches used by enginemen was to check air lines for leakage, according to my wife's late grandfather, who hired on the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1916. According to him, with the blower and air compressor and injector going, it was difficult to hear an air leak, but the torch flame would flicker when passed by a leaking fitting.
