But they were closer to the depot in Laws than they were to the open-air engine servicing facilities.  Your photo captures the essence of the seventy miles that survived in the Owens Valley after the rest of the former Carson & Colorado, "built 300 miles too long or 300 years too soon", was abandoned.

Here's a short stretch of more typical S.P.N.G. re-installed a while back as seen in late February, 2011.  The surroundings are almost as lush as the central antipœdes:
