My family has had property in Georgetown since 1946 and even then, not all the houses were occupied. Even in the 70's, when I worked for the loop, affordable housing was at a premium. I was lucky because I was able to live at the family house, but so much of the housing in G-town and Plume was either not inhabitable or owned and occupied in the summer by the "out of state" folks for summer homes. Many employees lived on the property. Rick stayed in the freight end of the depot and Jerry and his family lived in the DRGW Refer. In later years, the railroad was able to purchase a building with two apartments in G-Town for railroad employees to stay.
Different reasons, but same problem...the more things change, the more they stay the same....
