As a Journeyman Carpenter, I too agree with this thinking. I do realize it would never be historically accurate, but I love to see the craftsmanship that the paint covers.

I had a ‘63 GMC 3/4 ton that I thought I would deviate from today’s restoration practices. Instead of the common practice of stainless steel with clear coat and maybe stain on the ash, I would clear coat over a dark ebony stain with anodized metal so as to keep a closer to a purists look of paint but still showing the wood on closer inspection. I have always thought this could be possible for a locomotive cab as in pictures it would look painted but up close you could see and appreciate the fine craftsmanship and details.
