Now I would never disagree that a charter is a great way of getting good photography. But mixing exercise with photography is a nice combination. Nothing wrong with riding a train to somewhere, doing some hiking, getting maybe one or two pix, doing some more hiking, and catching a train home. One of the things I used to love about chasing Chinese steam out of Reshui is I could walk out of the hotel in the early morning, climb the hillside behind the hotel, and spend an entire day hiking around and taking pictures. On a couple of occasions I have hiked from Silverton to Elk Park just for one or two pix. So I think Greg's suggestion of using the D&S flag stops is an interesting idea, so long as photography is just one of the goals. But like Jerry I'm 78 and beginning to wonder how far I can hike these days. But here are a few pix from my hiking days.
Not photography but fishing, I have an old friend from the SP who had an uncle who worked in the car shop at Alamosa. As a kid George would visit him in the summer, and on at least one occasion they rode the San Juan to Los Pinos in the morning, went fishing for a few hours, and then rode the San Juan back to Alamosa in the late afternoon.
