A charter is absolutely the best way to get wilderness photos of either railroad. You could spend years, and do a ton of hiking (which is great, if you're young and in great physical shape) or you could spend a thousand bucks and get the shots in a couple of days.....and with smoke!
Alas, as Michael indicates, only one of the two railroads seems particularly interested in this type of business. I am glad that I took advantage of the opportunities that existed during the last decade.
