I don't know why, but it appears it was common to nail or tack some type of instruction or other informational notices to the end of the reefers. I've highlighted the photos posted by Jerry showing this and it appears it was some type of paper. I'll look and see if I can find any photos of a reefer with anything posted on the ends. Interesting find and detail.
