I think what Jerry is referring to is that in the late 50's and 60's there seemed to be less priority to keep the outward appearances of the locos as pristine as earlier times. With how busy the NG was with all the pipe traffic they barely had time to put a lock away after a run it seemed. You can see all types of "weathering" at any time period on the NG...they are steamers and got dirty!!
