Hello my friends,
The D&RGW 470s (K-28s) are my favorite steam locomotives. I am trying to understand the changes that were made to them over the years, both collectively and to individual locomotives.
Here is what my untrained eye has uncovered so far:
- tender lettering was changed to the Flying Rio Grande about 1940
- cab numbers were made larger & bolder when the tender lettering changed
- brakeman’s cabins were added to the top of the tenders about 1940
- toolboxes could be found on the pilot deck of some (like 474) but I haven’t figured out exactly which units did/didn’t have them and at what times
- some units (like 470) had additional piping and plating on the engineer’s side of the firebox, though I don’t know what it’s for
- plows seem to be added and removed seasonally, but some units seem to wear a plow more often than others
- 473 got a footboard pilot in 1956
- diamond stacks later on of course
- 473 painted bumble bee
What haven’t I discovered yet?
EDIT: I’m more interested in 1920s to 1950s general service stuff, not necessarily movie or tourist or Alaska info.
