Ned,

on the right with all current locomotives, the exception to this were the first classes of true Mainline Diesels, A-unit double cab D^F and single cab D^G, driven from the centre position, since at the time of introduction these were intended to be single-manned, an Assistants seat was shoehorned into the lefthand corner. Actually the first, the end-cab D^E had dual controls facing forward. The '55 built D^A a GMD G-12 were the first proper righthand operation.
