Narrow Gauge Narrow Frame Tank Cars Before They Were Narrow Gauge Narrow Frame Tank Cars

February 12, 2018 05:15PM
Attached is a builders photo of one of the cars from the group that included those that were eventually converted into narrow frame narrow gauge tank cars. They were UTLX Class X, meaning that they had the center sill running the length of the car, which held the tank up and which transmitted pulling force between couplers. They were built by Standard Steel Car, AC&F, Pressed Streel Car, and Standard Oil Co. The D&RGW narrow gauge had some made by each. The attached photo is of a Standard Steel Car unit. Most were built in 1908.

To convert the cars to narrow gauge, they replaced the center sill with the narrow frames that you are familiar with. I think this was to lower the couplers and center of gravity, but it may be that the narrow gauge trucks could not rotate sufficiently with the sill there.
