Once upon a time on the KYLE I was called to relieve a crew who were not going to make it in because of "trouble". When we pulled up to the crossing where the conductor was we faced two tank cars equipped with THREE trucks. It seems the second truck of the first car decided to take the switch at the last elevator. It went completely outside the track being pulled along by the brake rod! It knocked two spur leads a foot out of alignment, put a dent in a grain leg support pipe, crossed a state highway spraying ballast (OK, in KS mostly dirt) everywhere and it still made it a mile before the clevis pin finally gave up. The section was called and they went out into a fully grown wheat field to get it. The car shop and section put it back under the car, replaced the pin and we proceeded to the shop where the car shop could give it a good look. Tight lock couplers help avoid what could have been a mess. My point of this whole rant is I doubt the brake rods let go!
