Jerry, if you are ever near The Tintic Branch, again go to the old Depot in Eureka, they have a new museum Director, their Facebook page has been really active this year, posting many photos of the Shay's that were active in Eureka, Silver City and Mammoth Mines.
I have to agree with Sam, the State of Utah missed the boat by not preserving the old D&RGW right-of-way. The scenery though would have been similar to the Nevada Northern RR. Though it would have had two nice Tunnels to travel through and loops plentiful. I think that part of the reason the Railroad right of way wasn't preserved, is because of the activity of the mines in the area, even now the land is posted no trespassing, even though it's on BLM ground. Back in the latter eighties when I was breaking young colts, I would ride the old Railroad grade from Elberta to Eureka and back, it was an all day ride, the grade was nice on the horse's feet as there wasn't any gravel or big rocks to go through, I was even able to ride through the upper tunnel, now it's been blasted over, and you have to take the short cut road that totally cuts you off from the sweeping loop that feeds into the tunnel. Yeah Utah really wreeks when it comes to train preservation.
Still a Student,
Dave
