So the above is painting with a broad brush, but "The younger folks have no desire to work because they expect to go to college and graduate with a $100k per year starting salary so they can began working their way up" is not?
I have to come to the defense of Michael here. This bashing the younger generation just doesn't wash for me. The average first year salary out of college ranges from about $34,000 to $64,000, depending on the job. Colleges have career centers. It does not come as a secret to college students what salaries they should expect upon graduation.
Another broad brush: "Most young people have been programmed to believe that 'without a college education you won't go anywhere.' and that being a tradesman is beneath them."
Well, if that's the case, who programmed them? They didn't program themselves.
Someone else mentioned student debt. It is true that a large percentage of college students graduate with student loans. When I went to the University of California, the cost in fees and tuitions was about $750 per year. Adjusted for inflation, that would be about $2700 in today's dollars. Yet, the tuition and fees at the same institution is currently over $15,000 per year. Young people are not the ones who created that situation.
We lament that kids don't take shop. In my high school we had wood shop, electric shop, metal shop and auto shop. (We also had wood shop in junior high.) Now, the local high school has none of those. When I asked why, they said they can't afford them. The young people didn't create that situation, either.
I am reminded of a Broadway show that was very popular back when some of you less-than-young people were yourselves young; that is, 1960 and 1961. It had a well-known song titled "Kids." The lyrics go like this:
Kids!
I don't know what's wrong with these kids today!
Kids!
Who can understand anything they say?
Kids!
They a disobedient, disrespectful oafs!
Noisy, crazy, dirty, lazy, loafers!
While we're on the subject:

Older generations criticizing younger generations has probably been going on for as along as there has been more than one.
