Hiring on the railroad was always done by the theory of relativity, mostly because the jobs paid twice as much as other local employment. If your father was a trackman, you could be a trackman. If your father was an engineer, you could start in engine service; if he was an official, you'd start as a clerk and move quickly into management. Nepotism far outwieghed pertinent skills or interest and outsiders didn't have a chance at a job. The only way I got hired was that my wife ran a Brownie troop and the general manager's wife was her assistant. When I first started, several workers asked me "Whose boy are you?" and were upset that I was hired and their boy wasn't. The CVR was so inbred that you had to work there 10 years before they didn't think you were a spy.. It's not that bad anymore on the class 1's, but there still plenty of relatives on the payroll.
