We had a counselor at our school that would make any kid who was’ planning to go to a two year college, trade school, or the military feel pretty much like a low life for not attending a 4 year college or university. I had one really sharp student who told her he was planning to attend Universal Technical Institute, and she did everything she could to talk him out of it. When he told me about it, I took one of my tech manuals for computer controls to her office and had her read a few paragraphs and to tell me what it meant. Of course she had no idea, so then I pointed out that our new computerized high tech cars take smart, skilled techs to repair them and they are well paid and have job security. Out here most auto techs fees start at $100 and hour and dealerships charge much more than that. How many kids with liberal arts degrees make anywhere close to that? I hope the day comes soon where society finally wakes up and realizes that ‘college is the solution to everything’ crowd sold them a bill of goods.
Oh, by the way that student who went to UTI complained to me that when the recession hit in 2008 his income was reduced to only $80,000, but his wife with a masters degree lost her job.
