This is a Gil Bennett painting. I've been friends with gil for almost 30 years, In fact my wife and i had lunch with him today and were happily playing with my 1924 era c-25 on his Sn3 railroad most of the afternoon. Gil has created arid scenery very well. His railroad is set in November with bare trees, lots of sage and rabbit brush and dry arroyos. All he ever wanted to be in life was a railroad artist, and moody November mountains brood on the backdrop.
He is a student and admirer of Fogg, and met Mr. Fogg several times at his home. He completed the half finished "last Fogg" of the ICRR in downtown chicago at night, and has restored a number of Fogg watercolors stored in damp places and splotched with mildew as well. Now, in addition to doing railroad paintings, he fixes and installs decoders in brass locomotives. I have not talked to Gil about this one, but I assume he used the Jukes photo as reference and placed the consist at Coxo in accordance with the wishes of the person who commissioned him for the book cover.
