Hi Rich,
I believe that all of Nikon's full-frame cameras have that "DX-crop" mode....or at least the D4 and D750 do. The resulting DX image on even the 24 MP D750 is really too small for regular use. Now, a 19 MP image on the D850 could definitely be a player, but I'm not all that crazy about the magnification effect on my lenses. A while back, I did a study in Lightroom to see the what was the average focal length of images that I had posted on various websites or published in magazines and calendars. The answer came back 24mm. Yep, most of the shots that people seemed to like were the ones that were shot at the wide end of the 24-120 or 24-70. That is not to say that they're all "in-your-face", train shots, but they were mostly wide shots. I also shot one photo charter back in 2013 with the 24-120mm f/4G VR before I had a full-frame body. I was constantly frustrated that my widest focal length was too long. The 36mm wide end on a DX crop is just not wide enough....for me, at least.
I'm told that on the D850, there is another "mode" that allows one to shoot FF, but reduce the sensor resolution. THAT would work for me if the IQ is good enough. I know that Jerry doesn't use that mode, but perhaps he could comment if it works the way I think it works. I have been down to Hunt's Camera (the big dealer here in the Boston area) several times with the goal of taking a serious look at the 850 and the best advice they've been able to give me is: "Come see us in March."
It is possible that what I really want/need is a D5s or D6. I love my D4. I have never had any issues with it and can hammer nails with it if I want to. I cannot make either claim about the 750. It's a nice camera, when everything is working correctly.....but it's not built like a tank.
