I agree with most of what Kevin wrote. Where I disagree is about what lenses work with the D850. You might want to read this article by the best aviation photographer in the country.

While there certainly are differences in the various lenses. Some have better technical specs than others of course. But as Moose writes, in many cases the differences are hard to detect in the images themselves. I suspect it is Nikon trying to sell the more expensive lenses. I shot the following image with the D800 with a 24-120 lens which does not make the list of Nikon's approved lenses for the D850. This image was used on the cover of the Friends 2017 calendar, was published in the British Nikon magazine, was made into coffee cups and t-shirts. It is always good if you can afford the best glass for your cameras, but just because one lens has better technical specs than another does not mean that the lesser lens cannot produce good images.
