I fail to understand just what
relevance is the Highway Map name(s) in this discussion on the D&RG? Just a modern day re-definition of several passes in that area.
There is already enough confusion in the posts of this entire thread.
Numerous books on the Rio Grande mention specifically by name, Veta Pass when referencing the N.G. line and La Veta for the later S.G. deviation.

Colorado Railroads Map of Veta Pass; line passed Veta Mt; rounded Mule Shoe curve then around the face of Dump Mountain and then crossed the Sangre de Cristo range at 9,390ft, highest point of any US railroad at that time. Line completed from end of track at La Veta to Garland City, July 1877. The D&RG had reached La Veta Town one year earlier.
