The Ice Man

Oh yeah, ice was big business. At one time they even shipped ice from New England to India (in sailing ships!) so, if you did things right, he technology was there to keep it from melting for a long time.
Must have been really "fun" going out in mid-winter to cut ice by hand. Eventully they used power saws and other things.
Industry lasted until the 1950's in many places.

ps to be somewhat on-topic: C&S hauled a lot of ice out of the area between Baileys & Grant on the South Park line to Kenosha Pass.
