See Bollinger & Bauer, "The Moffat Road," p. 236, and pp. 257 - 259. The caption on p. 257 summarizes the situation:
"On July 12, 1941 a large corrugated iron culvert just below East Portal gave way under the passage of D&RGW 3919 eastbound. After Office Engineer Sunergren's plans for a ninety-foot steel girder span across South Boulder Creek and the highway below had been rejected, his instructions for installing the culvert were disregarded with the result shown here. " The photos posted here appear to be L. J. Daly photos, as are the ones in the book.
The photo on p. 236 is not dated, but was earlier, showing D&RGW 3607, a water car and caboose on the wooden trestle at this location, when the D&SL was checking the clearances and bridge deflection of the 3600s before allowing them to be used on the D&SL between Denver and the Dotsero Cutoff.
