It looks like the wooden trestle collapsed under the engine as it took the curve. Not uncommon if they were going too fast. If too much lateral load is placed on the outside rail, the whole deck simply tips over taking the train with it. It seems the RR took no time in replacing the trestle with a girder bridge with concrete abutments.
