A couple of years ago I attended a clinic by Patrick Student, and I seem to remember that there was a rule out guideline that the mid_train helper was located far enough forward so that the front engineer could handle the front portion of the train in case it separated from that helper. Therefore, if the lead loco could handle 8 cars up a grade, the helper was placed between the eighth and ninth cars.

Makes sense to me.
