Not saying that is where those shovels are going but plenty of WWII projects rolling and lots of American servicemen on the front lines long before Dec 7th. American flying the PBY that found the Bismarck in May of '41 and US Navy escorting convoys all the way to Iceland with the USS Kearney and the USS Rueben James being torpedoed in October. The RJ was sunk killing 115. These were in addition to Americans serving with foreign governments like the American Volunteer Group and other organizations.
The shovels must have been headed to the Durango area or the NM coal mines. A pretty good size operation to order two new shovels at the same time. Great pics and no question what my next flat car project will be. I think I will be giving Eric Bracher a call at Rio Grande Models to place an order for a couple more of his great Lorain shovel kits.
A very poor Quality shot of a D&RGW shovel sitting in Silverton by the way. Could have been the Railroads's own equipment.
