Durango roundhouse on the morning of Tuesday, January 22, 1963.
No. 497 was on the outbound track under steam (it had been there the previous evening as well), and nearby No. 488 was fired up for a "possible run to Farmington" (according to the caption on the slide).
Most interesting was 478 inside the roundhouse, which was jacked up somewhat haphazardly for repairs to its pilot truck. (Didn't repairs like this usually occur at Alamosa?).
The 473 was also hot inside the roundhouse.
According to the photographer, Richard Thompson, they were only passing through on their way to California and didn't stay long because they didn't want to miss seeing steam run at Knotts Berry Farm (!).
