The equipment gained a lot of weight over time. In the early days even the 4-4-0's (having about half the tractive effort of a T-12) were able to handle 5-7 car trains over the flatter divisions, or two cars unassisted up the steep sections. The 4-6-0's were used on trains that could be ten or more cars at times, and ran them at twenty five or thirty miles an hour.
I'm not sure what the modern coaches weigh, but up to twenty tons or so I'd expect a T-12 to be handle three of them on a 4% grade, albeit not very quickly. But really who wants to beat up the roundhouse queen? Let the mikados do the heavy slogging, that's what they're for.
