As drgwk37 pointed out, rocks and trees were the problem on the Silverton. Rotaries are excellent snow removing machines on drifted snow at places like Cumbres where the railroad runs at the top of the canon instead of down inside it like on the Silverton Branch. Slides were the biggest problem on the Branch and they were almost always full of those pesky rocks and trees. Pilot plows and section men's shovels were much more productive there, later superseded by bulldozers and front end loaders.
