For several years in the 1980-90's we used both RPO's of their intended purpose carrying mail on opening day. A special postal cancellation was created and you could get your mail cancelled on board the train for that day. Also a special envelope was created each year the train was run. If I recall we only ran one or two RPO's from Antonito, be we ran a bunch from Chama. Once opening day got big enough to require a double header, I had to think again about how stout one of those wood RPO cars were. Those itty-bitty passenger Janney couplers look real frail when coupled to a big AAR knuckle on the locomotive and on the steel coaches....
