In a post last year on this forum, I believe that Randy Babcock indicated that the D&S had adjusted its locomotive strategy to include 7 locomotives.....presumably 4 x K-36 and 3 x K-28. Randy did not discuss any other locomotives. I believe that their goal was to keep 6 in service and allow up to an 18-month window to do major repairs on the 7th. They've recently announced that the 476 will return to operation in February, and based on Randy's report, the 478 would be next in line for boiler and running gear repairs, as well as a 1,472 SDI. Randy reported that the 478 actually needed less major repair work than the 476.
If I have interpreted Randy correctly, I don't believe that a K-28 trade is any longer on the table. I would speculate that the more work that the D&S puts into their K-28s, the less and less likely that any changes in strategy are likely to occur.
