Ned, years ago there was almost an entire work session of the Friends devoted to cleaning up the Chama yard. It was covered with junk which was laying almost everywhere, and in my opinion, much headway was made in making the yard look neater.
Having said that the swamp, where most of the "junk" is has proven to be an wonderful resource for both the Friends and the railroad as a parts source for our 100+ year old equipment that we restore and make operational. We do not have the phone # of Locomotives-R-Us, or antique Railcars-R-Us, so we must save everything we can find for possible use some day in the future. Just this week Chris and Randy made a trip over to the swamp and found a brake wheel and it's shaft, gear, and other parts for the Gramps car they are restoring in Antonito. It is now on the car and look and works great.
While I would agree things like that turned over SG hopper could probably be scrapped, and there are probably a few other items as well, the question is 'which items will you need in the future, and which will never be used? I don't think any of us know for sure.
