I've not been to Chama since July of 1995, I'm long overdue for a visit, so I'm jumping in head first. I'm planning on riding the RGS Goose on 9/30 from Antonito then I'm in the Fireman School. If I'm traveling halfway across the country, I'm going to do more than just ride one way! I'm pulling together the last of the things i need to bring and I could use some advice from more experienced folks.
I remember that the weather can change a great deal over the 64 miles between Chama and Antonito, sometimes very quickly. I've never been there in early October, however. What sorts of weather should I prepare for at that time of year? Would I be correct to assume the weather would likely be sunny with a chance of hail? I assume it's best to dress in layers, but I'd gladly listen to advice on rain, snow, and an ideal type of coat / jacket to bring.
Would anyone happen to have recommendations regarding earplugs which would be suitable for spending time around locomotives? I'd like to protect my hearing, but I don't want to block out too much. There will be a lot going on that I will need to listen to. I'd like to block hearing-damaging noise, but not so much that I miss anything important or jeopardize safety.
I am really looking forward to this trip!
