Was #3403 kept shined up for passenger service, or didn't they bother? Any photos?

The thought of a low driver'd Mallet being the favored passenger engine cracks me up every time I think about it. How close did a seven car passenger train take her to her tonnage rating? What power was used before the #3400's came to Alamosa?
