No, each telegraph wire was a separate "earth return" circuit.

The ground wires applied to the poles were not physically connected in any way to the telegraph wire conductors themselves, t
They were stapled along the top of the crossarms and below the insulators and then connected to a common wire staple down the pole to a spiral stapled to the bottom of the pole butt deep in the earth.
