I'm not entirely sure how the accounting works, but I assume the railroad charges enough to provide a desired profit margin. The only margin I've seen quoted was from 2012 when the Farrail/Lerro charter made an 18% profit. I would expect that they do better than that with current management.

The Friends then price the trip to produce a desired surplus that in this case is split 50/50 with the 168 fund and the Friends. The price the Friends charge also has to cover lunch at Osier for all participants, lots of bottled water, soda pop, breakfast donuts and granola bars plus coffee. For 70 people that's not a trivial number.

If fund raisers stop raising funds, I doubt if the Friends would continue to run charters just for the heck of it. There is a ton of non compensated work that goes into making one of these things a success.
