Cumbres semaphore

From photographs at one time there was a pole-mounted semaphore at the Cumbres depot where the pole base was on the platform and the pole extended up through the roof. I haven't found any photographs or information on the opening. Was it just a square or rectangular opening? Could a person climb through it on a ladder - if the pole had one? Was there a shroud or anything to keep water and stuff from coming through?

Any information appreciated.
