While the new frame timbers look nice and it is obvious that quite a bit of work has gone into them, I have to ask why?!?!?
C&S 1006 was completely intact and the ONLY surviving fully ORIGINAL C&S narrow gauge caboose on the face of the earth. I fail to see what is gained by completely dismantaling it, throwing 90% of the original wood in the trash and then building a new caboose. Now we will be left with no tangible record of how the C&S maintained their cabooses.
This is especially sad given how original, intact and in overall good condition 1006 WAS in. All it really needed was some relatively minor repairs and it would have continued to exist as the original, priceless historic artifact that it was. There was no good reason to tear it completely apart and even less of a reason to build a new frame. Building a replica would have been a better way for a group to display its car building skills than destroying a one of a kind original artifact.
Not everything needs to operate and not everything needs to be rebuilt to someone's 21st century vision of what it "should" be. This is especially true of a unique artifact like C&S 1006.
I am sorry, but in my view what has happened to 1006 shows a complete lack of respect for the artifact, its history and all those who worked on it before.
