After checking with a friend who was on the trip (but like me does not remember all the details), carefully checking the Kodak number stamps on the slides, perusing various satellite views, and checking the sun angles with the Photographer's Ephemeris, I am almost certain that the shot was around MP 385. just east of the sawmill at MP 385.9. I'm guessing that is where the road got bad enough that we chose not to chase the train any further in our rental car.
It's not really all that important but it is an interesting challenge trying to pin down stuff like this 50 years later.
