By the time I left GCRy, both wyes were variable with the exception of the tail switch at Grand Canyon which was a spring, and a few switches in the coach yard. Since I've left there, it seems even the locomotive shop has gotten them (the locomotive shop trackage was also realigned a few years ago).
There was a switch that split Tracks 3 and 4 at the car shop that wasn't a variable, though painted black, it was in a similar housing as the variable just a few feet down on the main line. We jumped on another train set from the one we'd been working, and began to pull with myself on the rear. Turn out the engineer had ran though the non variable switch and had cause the assembly to shatter into a few pieces which was a mix of the housing and internal gears.
